The man Dotta captured didnât seem frightened at all.
He was the one and only Lideo Sodrick, and he was glaring at us like we were a nuisance. Maybe this was just the way he acted after all his years as a guild master, or maybe he simply didnât like us. I had no idea. What I did know was that heâd hardly fought back as his arms were being tied. Perhaps he knew that resisting wouldnât get him anywhere.
We decided to use the large hall of the Adventurers Guild to question him, since there was too much going on outside. The guild building was falling apart, thanks to us, but at least it was essentially empty. Every person in the district who wanted to run away had already made it out. I was sure Lideo Sodrick had some kind of right-hand man, but I hadnât seen anyone like that around since things began to settle down. That said, I wasnât sure if whoever it was had run for it or if they were simply biding their time.
âI want a man on watch on all sides of the building,â ordered King Norgalle before taking a seat in one of the few chairs that had miraculously survived the chaos. Looking around at the remaining adventurers, he said, âI am offering you a chance to atone for your crimes. Obey my commands and dedicate yourself to our nation.â
Though clearly bewildered, those he was speaking to had no choice but to start moving. These were the men who had surrendered after witnessing the violence Tatsuya and Jayce were capable of, along with the destruction Norgalle had visited upon the district. There were nine of them. They exchanged timid glances, then approached the crumbling walls and windows and began keeping watch.
Patausche and I would be doing the questioning. Tatsuya and Jayce couldnât handle such a task, and Dotta was busy throwing back shots of booze as if heâd just finished a hard dayâs work. After verbally abusing me, Frenci got her two guards who had already recovered and began to search the inside of the guild. If they managed to find physical evidence, that would probably be more useful than any confession we might manage to extract. Meanwhile, as for Teorittaâ¦
âRepent.â The goddess crossed her arms haughtily before Lideo Sodrick, who had been forced to sit on the floor. âYou kept a faerie as a pet, turned to wrongdoing, and attacked us! You have committed a grave sin, and if you understand that, then you need to repent this instant.â
She looked back at me. âWhat do you think, Xylo? Look at his solemn expression. He must be in awe of my presence.â
âYou think so?â
âI know so! Impressive, huh? â¦Now, for you. Tell us everything.â
I had offered to do the questioning, but Teoritta wasnât having any of it. Her mood seemed to have improved immensely, and she was now trying to prove her usefulness. To be completely honest, she wasnât doing a very good job.
âI donât know much,â replied Lideo gloomily.
